Mulawin the Movie

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketDistributor:GMA Films/Regal Entertainment
Release:December 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Romance
MTRCB Rating:GP

This movie takes off from where the TV series ended ... Alwina and Aguiluz are in a boat to travel to wherever they plan to settle, but are shipwrecked. Both lose their memory and end up miles apart. They have to find each other while at the same time survive the war brought about by the resurrection of an ancient foe of the birdmen.

Slight improvement on the special effects, more recognizeable actors included ... but it still feels like I'm watching the TV series.

Half the Metro Manila Filmfest movies cater mostly to children or teens. I expected Exodus to be such. I've always regarded Bong Revilla as a person who appears in fairly decent movies and sitcoms, not great, but decent compared to movies/shows usually made to cater to the "masa". I was excited to find out if this film was good or not.

Compared to Filipino films made in the genre of action/fantasy (note that I haven't watched that many Filipino action/fantasy movies - the trailers fail to catch my attention) I'd say this is good. Could have been better, but I think the producers were short on budget, and they either had little time to fine tune the story, or they had little time to take more footage, or they were forced to make cuts so that the movie never ran more than two hours (it is 1 hr and 46 mins long). Whatever it is, something was lacking.

Characters:
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThe main character, Exodus, was of the mercenary turned hero on a quest destined to be king mold. It's so cliche it's boring. In this story, the hero didn't know he is the son of the dead king - a spirit elemental who decided to live among mortals and be the king of humans.

However, the ideas behind the other characters were good, and it would have been cooler had the characters been further developed or executed well.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketTayho, an earth elemental that looks like a mix between Tikbalang and Centaur, is a fast, strong, but stupid and cowardly creature. When Bagulbol and his minions were wiping out his species, they didn't bother to look for him (coward that he is, he probably went into hiding) as they considered him harmless. He was the only character who didn't get a decent fighting scene. I could deal with that as it fits his cowardly nature. What I hated was Benjie Paras' use of the mannerisms so common in Pinoy comedy to supposedly make the character "funny". I therefore found him annoying rather than funny in some scenes. I don't know if it was Benjie's idea to act that way, or it was the director telling him to.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketSilab, a fire elemental that looks something out of the Dragonball Z cartoon, is the eternal child that could throw balls of fire and split into mean fighting twins when he wishes to. His preference to wander meant that he wasn't around when the rest of his kind was wiped out by Bagulbol. He later decided to live in the ruins of his city, where Exodus found him. BJ Forbes is a child actor who first got attention in the Tide commercials. His acting here however was overshadowed by a very bad red wig that production stuck on his head.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketBangkila is an aswang. She was an air elemental who broke the laws in a quest to be more powerful and was therefore sent into exile. She was consequently not present when her people were killed. She doesn't care about anybody and prefers to be alone. Cold, calculating, sharp metal fingernails, and wings that allow her to fly swiftly, Bangkila is, in my book, the coolest of Exodus' "sidekicks".

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketLin-Ay is considered the fairest of the water elementals. Those who were envious of her had her tied up at the bottom of a lake, where she is doomed to sleep forever. Many had forgotten her existence by the time her people were killed. She woke up when Exodus untied her. Her costume reminds me of the floating women in Japanese paintings. A very feminine creature, she proved able to defend herself in a nice action scene where she levitated rocks to surround her and therefore block lightning arrows. One swift pebble was all it took for her opponent to taste the sweet kiss of death.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketKing Bagulbol as the villain is played by Jay-R ... making this one of those stories where the villain is good-looking and knows it. The number of masks and costumes he changes into underline the vanity of the character. Apparently, Bagulbol is one of the last known spirit elementals alive as he is so insecure that he wiped out species/creatures that posed any threat to him. To take the throne, he masterminded an uprising and killed the old king (Exodus' father).

Now for my favorite character:

In Bagulbol's court sits Alas. This courtier spends most of the day reading "tarot" cards that one usually sees floating around him. As his main talent is reading future events in his cards, he is not of the warrior type and easily retreats during battle. He could, however, turn his cards into projectiles - and anyone who has been cut by paper knows it is actually possible to get hurt by cards or paper. The floating cards are cool, but what I find cooler is that they had comedian Long Mejia play the role ... and I commend him for not taking the "comedian route" with this role like Benjie Paras.

The plot:
Bagulbol killed the old king and proclaimed himself the new ruler of the mortal world. A former guardian of humans like the other spirit elementals, he found humans too weak to deserve his protection and he plans to create his own species ... which basically involved capturing humans and turning them into mutants.

Humans rebelled but were no match to Bagulbol and his forces. Finally, only one settlement of humans was left: Bantayan. The leader of the rebels knew that the humans's hope of survival lies in killing Bagulbol, and he knows that it would take the help of other elementals to kill him. The rebels pool the money they have to hire the mercenary Exodus to go into the world of encantos to find elementals that could still be alive if the legends they hear are true.

The leader intentionally put on the list an earth elemental, a fire elemental, an air elemental, a water elemental and a spirit elemental. Exodus would capture all except the last one who was already dead courtesy of Bagulbol. The leader of the rebels was crestfallen to find out that Bagulbol is the last spirit elemental alive. Had the other spirit elemental lived, he could merge with the other four elementals and therefore match Bagulbol's strength (I am assuming that Bagulbol was strong because he had absorbed other elementals into himself ... by force).

As luck would have it, Exodus would later learn that he is the son of the old king and therefore also a spirit elemental. He escaped death because his father ordered one of his trusted men to take him far away before he faced Bagulbol. So in the end, like Voltes 5, the five elementals "volt in" (Exodus absorbs the other four elementals into him) in order to fight Bagulbol... if you got lost on the voltes5 reference then you're 10 years older off my age (older or younger). Note that the other elementals willingly merge with him, and therefore after the fight they leave Exodus' body.

More than half the movie was spent chronicling Exodus' quest to find the other elementals, leaving little time for the fighting sequences ... the confrontations ended too fast considering that opposing forces had formidable powers. If they planned that each of the elementals would have a nemesis, then they should have given those fight sequences more time. The confrontation between Bagulbol and Exodus at the end of the movie started out promising but soon lost steam.

Imus Production is one of the producers of this movie. The company is owned by the Revillas so you'd see many of them in the movie: starting with the Bong Revilla, his father Ramon Revilla, and Bong's sons.

The movie is not so bad compared to Filipino films of the same genre. It is not as memorable as Rizal and other good Filipino movies, and it would definitely pale in comparison to North American fantasy movies. It is noteworthy though that unlike most Filipino fantasy movies, Exodus decided not to become an all-out comedy like the Pedro Penduko and Okay Ka, Fairy Ko movies.

Etheria starts today. I thought it was a prequel so I was surprised to see an older Ybrahim, now king of Sapiro, teaching his granddaughter the history of Encantadia. Apparently, they are going the route of flashbacks.

Week 32

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingNetwork:GMA
First Run:May 2 - December 9, 2005
Genre:Adventure, Fantasy
Time Slot:Weekdays, 9:00 p.m.

Trying to keep up with this daily series has proven to be tough for me. Book One finally ended today.

Lireo wins the war against Hathoria with the aid of Sapiryans that rally under Ybrahim. Among the dead are Pirena's daughter Mira, King Hagorn of Hathoria, Sapiro's renegade Prince Asval, and Aquil, Lireo's Captain of the Queen's guard.

Lira is hailed the new queen of Lireo but she abdicates in order to go back to her mortal love, Anthony. As Amihan refuses the crown, Danaya is chosen the new queen of Lireo. Prince Ybrahim marries Alena, and is crowned king of the resurrected kingdom of Sapiro.

After a number of decades, Lira's mortal husband dies and she goes back brokenhearted to Encantadia, with a wish to die and go to Devas. Her mother grants her wish with a heavy heart. Cassiopeia takes a lock of Lira's hair and mixes it with her blood to create the child Cassandra, Lira's heir. Unknown to Cassiopeia, this act of hers stirs up the magic that wakes up remnants of the fallen kingdom of Etheria.

Thus is the setting for the start the series to be called Etheria.

Movie: Just Like Heaven

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketDistributor:DreamWorks SKG
Release:September 16, 2005
Genre:Comedy, Romance, Science Fiction/Fantasy and Adaptation
MPAA Rating:PG-13 for some sexual content.

About a decade ago, one would find Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo playing supporting roles in movies. These days they have moved on to lead roles and have teamed up in this romantic comedy.

Reese is as usual, the perfect person to play the ambitious, overworked female - and she believes that playing such roles help in erasing the stereotype of the dumb blonde. In this movie, she plays Elizabeth, a resident doctor who makes a habit out of rendering more hours of work than is required of her. After one of those busy days, she fails to focus on where she is driving and gets in an accident.

The apartment she used to live in is now rented by David, a landscaper and widower whose loss is still fresh and has taken to being a recluse. Elizabeth is angry to find a strange man in her apartment, David thinks being alone has made him crazy enough to be talking with a person no one else can see or hear. Elizabeth eventually realizes she is not corporeal and that she has forgotten who she is, and asks David to help her find out her history and what happened. A man dealing with an invisible companion will bring out laughs in any movie. The most hilarious scene here is when the two are in a restaurant and someone needed to have an emergency procedure performed on him ... David tries to tell others what is wrong with the man but keeps getting the word Elizabeth is using wrong, then he ends up doing the procedure himself under Elizabeth's direction in order to save the man's life.

This incident makes Elizabeth remember she was a doctor. They track down her body and find it lying in coma in the same hospital where she used to work. They got there just in time because the hospital is recommending to Elizabeth's sister that life support be turned off. This would mean death, and probably Elizabeth's spirit disappearing to wherever the dead go to. Elizabeth must find a way to return to her body before its life support is taken away. David and Elizabeth realize how fond they are of each other when faced with the idea of parting from each other. By a stroke of luck, David figures out how Elizabeth can return to her body.

Sadly, once Elizabeth wakes up from her long coma, she forgets everything that happened after the accident ... including the time she spent with David. She could not explain though why she likes to visit certain places, not remembering that those were the places where her spirit and David used to hang out.

David gives up the apartment, and finds out that Elizabeth will be moving back in. In a last ditch attempt, he builds her dream rooftoop garden, and when she sees him in it, remembers everything. That is where the story ends.

Despite brilliant comic moments, some of them involving the pyschic dude Daryl, the movie is essentially a love story. Unfortunately, the romance is too light to make this a significant love story.

Movie: Chicken Little

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Distributor:Buena Vista Pictures Distribution
Release:November 4, 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure, Comedy and Animation
MPAA Rating:G

The movie starts off great by treating the "sky is falling" story we read in kinder as one of the most embarrassing moments of Chicken Little's short life, having only happened a year before the movie story's timeline. Everybody remembers how the town was in bedlam when Chicken Little rang the town bell and ran around shouting that the sky is falling. It is a good thing that his father, Buck Cluck, is supportive about the incident. In other matters, his Buck is bordering on being over-protective for he thinks Chicken Little takes after his mother - small and of weak constitution - which when you think about it, is not supportive at all.

Chicken Little would be happy if everybody just forgot the incident, but the bullies, led by Foxy Loxy, think it's fun to pick on him and his gang - which when you think about it, is a bunch of losers.

Things get interesting when something strange thing fell on Chicken Little's head that had him thinking that it's probably the same object that he thought was a piece of the sky a year ago. Fish Out of Water experiments with it and is beamed up into a space ship - forcing Chicken Little and the rest of the gang to follow and rescue him. On their way down to earth, a furry alien child named Kirby follows them to explore earth. Unfortunately, the disappearance of Kirby alarms his parents who launch an attack on earth in order to find him. The scenes are reminiscent of War of the Worlds and similar movies.

All's well at the end, with Kirby returned safely to his parents, the aliens leaving the earth in peace, and Chicken Little redeems his reputation. In addition, a movie is made portraying him and his friends as good looking superheroes... which shows what artistic license does to the real story.

Movie: Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingDistributor:Warner Bros. Pictures International
Warner Bros. Pictures Distribution
Release:November 18, 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure, Kids/Family and Science Fiction/Fantasy
MPAA Rating:PG-13 for sequences of fantasy violence and frightening images.

With the World Quidditch Cup and Tri-wizard tournament happening at the same time, this movie has more action sequences than the first three.

When screenshots were initially released for this movie, the first thing I noticed is that the Weasley boys sported long hair ... it's actually becoming for the twins, but on Rupert Grint who plays Ronald - he looks like a girl.

The new characters in Harry's circle introduced in this installment are Mad-Eye Moody, Cho Chang, and the Tri-wizard entrants: Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour and Viktor Krum. The movie's Cho is indeed charming, and Cedric is the typical hunk. However, Fleur looks more like the girl next door instead of the flirty pouty blonde I imagined, and Viktor is one handsome jock although in the books he isn't much of a looker and he limps.

The house elves are absent in this movie. So there are no S.P.E.W. jokes, no Winky covering for Barty Crouch, nor is Dobby present to help Harry prepare for the second task. Dobby's role in that scene is taken over by Neville, who I think is slowly being given more attention to prepare moviegoers for his bigger role in the next film, if they will follow what happened in Book 5. I imagined Rita Seeker to be more thin faced, and the Senior Crouch to look more dignified instead of comical.

That said, I still think that the movie is true to the spirit of the novel even if it changed some things.

Due to time constraints I wasn't able to keep a running update on the Rockstar: INXS show. Ofcourse you know by now that the band picked JD Fortune as its lead singer. Marty was "second" and Mig "third".

JD managed to turn me off in some episodes, but I have to admit he fits the band better than the others.

Marty got a good deal with his lovehammers band being offered the slot to open the INXS concerts in their US tour.

I love this show. I will buy the DVD when it comes out.

Movie: The Brothers Grimm

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingDistributor:Miramax Films
Release:August 26, 2005
Genre:Comedy, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Suspense/Horror and Thriller
MPAA Rating:PG-13 for violence, frightening sequences and brief suggestive material.

The writer/s of this movie probably thought: "What were the Grimm brothers doing before they started writing those fairy tales?"

The answer the movie comes up with: They belong to a band of four scam artists. Two of the group would go to a town and dress up as ghosts at night to scare the people, who would then call up the Grimm brothers to ask them to exorcise the ghosts. One of the brothers keeps a large notebook wherein he jots down the stories they encounter from town to town and this is presumably the source of the book of fairy tales they will publish later.

The group runs into trouble when they are exposed for the fakes they are, and in order to redeem themselves and buy their freedom, the brothers must try to perform a real exorcism. They are sent to a town where children are disappearing, the brothers find out that the nearby forest is home to an ancient and powerful witch who plans to use the children in a ritual that will increase her power and turn her from a frightening skeleton to the sexy fleshy woman she once was before the plague conquered her.

After a series of setbacks and encounters that almost kill them, the brothers succeed, realize they have real talent after all, and decide to spend their remaining lives being legit.

Matt Damon plays the brother who collects stories, but then he usually plays the geek in most movies he's done. Heath Ledger plays the other Grimm, and the supposed masterminded of their scams. Although I recognized Matt immediateley, I wasn't able to recognize Heath Ledger in the first few scenes. I could say Heath is getting more adept at losing himself in a character, whereas Matt still manages to cling on to a part of himself.

The movie has good visual effects. I have mixed feelings about the story, however. It starts out as a comedy of sorts then it progresses to suspense/thriller. Those looking for comedy would have difficulty looking for laughs after the first few scenes are over, while those who love scary movies would wish the movie to be more haunting. If you are a fan of fantasy films, the movie will not invite you to imagine being transported to the story's world either.

Movie: Sky High

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingDistributor:Buena Vista Pictures Distribution
Release:July 29, 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure, Comedy and Kids/Family
MPAA Rating:PG for action violence and some mild language.

It's hard for an adult to convince another adult to watch an obviously made for kids movie, especially if the only well known actors are Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston. This is what Sky High is. Kids will like it although I doubt it would be popular enough to have a TV series in the near future. The movie doesn't take itself seriously, which in my opinion adds to the fun.

The story starts with two superheroes, Commander (Russell) and Jetstream (Preston), whose son Will is entering high school. Not just any ordinary high school though, this is a school for superheroes in the making, as well as for kids of superheroes ... whether they are superhero material or not. For secrecy's sake, the school is on a floating platform which enables it to hide in the clouds. The students get there on a flying school bus.

Our young protagonist, Will, has a major problem which will cause him insecurity. Although his parents are two of the most powerful superheroes around, popular enough for the school bus driver to hold Will in awe because of his lineage, none of those powers have manifested itself in Will. In contrast, Layla, his best friend and neighbor, can already control trees and plants. Will does not know if he is just a late bloomer, or if he will remain an average human.

Unfortunately for Will's ego, there is a marked division in Sky High between students who have shown considerable power and students who have little or no power at all. You are either classified as "Hero" or "Sidekick" depending on your performance on a series of tests. Will ends up in the "Sidekick" program, and for bullies in sky high, his group is where the losers are. Will finds himself trying to survive the bullying with a handful of friends, mostly fellow sidekicks. It is during these attacks that Will's powers come out ... the teachers realize his potential and put him in the "Heroes" class.

What is a movie about superheroes if there are no villains? To complicate matters for Will, Sky High is attacked by his parents' worst enemy, who most people thought was dead. The villain attacks during a school dance, and turns everyone into babies, including Will's parents who are guests of honor.

It's a no brainer that the movie ends with Will and his sidekick/misfit friends saving the day.

It's not a monumental movie, but I enjoyed it enough that if they show it on cable, I'd probably watch it again.

Movie: The Dukes of Hazzard

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingDistributor:Warner Bros. Pictures Distribution
Release:August 5, 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure, Comedy and Adaptation
MPAA Rating:PG-13 for Sexual Content, Crude and Drug-Related Humor, Language and Comic Action Violence

I remember little of the TV series that inspired the creation of this movie ... I was too young to make sense of what I was seeing on TV although I do know that the episodes always involve two young guys who drive a fast car and are always getting in trouble. The series probably ran during the 1980s ... old enough for one of those guys to play Clark Kent's dad on TV's Smallville these days.

I don't know if they intended to make this a parody the way Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson made the Starsky and Hutch movie. It does have Sean William Scott, which I first noticed in the American Pie movies, and his character in this movie is definitely a funny, wild one. It's got Jessica Simpson playing the blond bombshell and wearing sexy outfits which is probably the only reason some boys would watch this movie.

Is the movie funny? It has funny moments, but not enough to have me rolling on the floor.

Movie: Wedding Crashers

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingDistributor:New Line Cinema
Release:July 15, 2005
Genre:Comedy
MPAA Rating:R for sexual content/nudity and language

The reason I watched this movie is to get a few laughs ... and I got them. I would think though that certain scenes have been snipped out by censors just so the movie can be shown in Philippine theaters. Either that or the real editors of the movie did a lousy job because some scenes just end abruptly.

This being an Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn movie ... I am not surprised at its mild irreverence. It's crazy to think some people could actually crash weddings the way the main characters in the story do ... it's crazier to think someone would even think of crashing funerals. Having Christopher Walken in the movie is a plus ... his character provides the straight face against which the shenanigans of Wilson and Vaughn's characters meet their match.

Movie: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDistributor:Warner Bros. Pictures
Release:July 15, 2005
Genre:Musical/Performing Arts and Science Fiction/Fantasy
MPAA Rating:PG
for quirky situations, action and mild language.
Since appearing in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp has built a reputation for portraying weird or offbeat characters. In this movie that reunites him (again) with Burton, Depp plays the rich, weird recluse owner of a chocolate factory - Willy Wonka. The story is based on a children's book written by Roald Dahl.

I remember seeing an earlier movie in grade school where Willy Wonka is played by Gene Wilder. It was a fun movie, but for someone whose age is below 10 (can't remember how old I was at the time), I found the idea that kids are invited into a place they thought was wonderful, only to have horrible things happen to them, was scary.

Now, I don't know if Tim Burton hires the same crew to create his sets, or whether his style always comes across regardless of what company is hired... but the opening, with the barely standing house, tells you that this is a Tim Burton film.

The Gene Wilder movie's version of the candy factory was awesome, and so is this movie's. With the technology available today, the Wonka factory is even richer. Your eyes would feast at the images presented on screen. Depp, as already mentioned, plays eccentric as he surely knows how. The other members of the cast were excellent as well. The older Buckets were endearing, Charlie is as normal and sweet as any unaffected boy of that age is, the other kids were delightfully bratty, their parents are borderline quirky, and Christopher Lee appears briefly as the misunderstood father of Willy Wonka.
But in my opinion, the real star of this show is Deep Roy. He is the face of the hundreds of Oompa-Loompas scattered throughout this movie. Imagine the hours he spent filming with the blue screen behind him! Oompa-Loompas are the diminutive workers in Wonka's factory ... but the way the script was made, Deep Roy doing "manual labor" is only secondary to the four - yes, FOUR - song and dance numbers of the Oompa-Loompas which is actually Deep Roy filmed many times over. He does disco, musical, flower child songs, techno, and even hard rock. He also played Wonka's psychiatrist and his women secretaries. In my opinion, he stole the show.Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Movie: The Island

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDistributor:Dreamworks SKG
Release:July 22, 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure, Thriller
MPAA Rating:PG-13
for intense sequences of violence and action, some sexuality and language

The title reminds me of those B horror movies that take place on an island, I wondered if some of that will surface in the film. Well nothing of that genre here, thankfully.

Cool premise: clones are being raised in a facility and they exist so that the original people they were cloned from could have spare parts. They're treated like kids although they have adult bodies. The movie, although entertaining, fails to sustain the plausibility (there will parts you'll be saying "Puh-leez").

Ewan McGregor shows here a bit his ability to shift character, including change in accent. Not surprising considering that the past movies he's done, taken together, show he could play either a misfit, rogue, rascal, respectable mentor, or hopeless romantic.

To complete the cast are Scarlett Johansson - the Lost in Translation girl, Sean Bean - who's back to his intellectual bad guy roles, Steve Buscemi - a character actor who has appeared in so many movies his face is more familiar than his name (he's got lots of speaking parts in this movie, yay!), and Djimon Hounsou - who's appeared in movies like Amistad and Hotel Rwanda.

Some of the questions that popped into my mind:
  • When did Lincoln start visiting McCord (the character played by Buscemi)? Why would McCord encourage the visits if he didn't like the trouble?
  • Why didn't the other workers report the visits?
  • Why was Lincoln able to hold on to the key to the maintenance area indefinitely?
  • Why did the clones have the same hair style as their sponsors? If they're being grown just for spare parts, why bother making their hair style reflect that of the sponsor?
  • Why was it easy for Lincoln and Jordan to figure out how to make love considering they weren't exposed to sex? Whereas, I've read in some newspaper that there are Chinese or Singaporean couples who had to be told how to do it by a doctor because no one told them how?

Rockstar: INXS
Week Three: Performance Night
(Cable TV)

Image hosted by Photobucket.comNetwork:Star World (Asia)
Episode Two:July 27, 2005
Genre:Reality/Music Show
Time Slot:Wednesday 9:30 a.m.;

Jordis missed her opening ... I don't know the song so I didn't notice because she recovered fast. Good girl. Suzie wasn't able to recover as fast.

Suzie's past performances had no recall for me (I only remember that she forgot lyrics during the first episode), but with her playing the harmonica tonight, she managed to make me remember her.

MiG's "Lola" had a nice start to it, and there were moments he was sexy onstage. I think he did okay, so I have no idea why Dave and INXS would want to see him sing after he's drunk half a bottle of vodka. They don't like JD being too cocky onstage but they want MiG to lose it. I also can't figure out why Dave suggested MiG throw his jacket and go topless ... how come the other male rockers weren't asked to go barechested? I think that jacket-throwing gimmick just earned MiG more fans tonight... mostly female.Image hosted by Photobucket.com

JD screwed up "We are the Champions" and had the gall to blame it on seeing his sister in the audience. Dude, that line of reasoning would have worked if we didn't see how you also sucked during rehearsal.

JD wasn't the only one who sounded terrible tonight - Brandon had trouble hitting notes, and I don't think Heather hit a right note at all (she sounded sick and she confirmed she was sick).

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDaphna supposedly murdered "Rock the Casbah", I don't remember if she sang it wrong, because I can't get the "trying to look cute" moves and the gown out of my head - that was a weird outfit.
I can't remember much of Deanna's performance, but I do remember thinking she looked cute - well that was after an officemate remarked she liked her hair. You caught me, I was watching during office hours.Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In past performances, Marty had a lot of antics onstage ... tonight, his performance was all about the song because he decided to stand still. Nice move, he impressed INXS.

Rockstar: INXS
Week Three: Reality Show
(Cable TV)

Image hosted by Photobucket.comNetwork:Star World (Asia)
Episode Two:July 27, 2005
Genre:Reality/Music Show
Time Slot:Wednesday 9:00 a.m.;

Apparently, the rockers have a clinic every week. Last week it was fashion tips, this week it's stage presence. The Rockers and INXS sat watching a video of selected performances and people critique what they see on screen. Most of the comments made sense, but the funny one would be about Suzie's teeth being so white and prominent it's distracting. Ofcourse, it prompted Suzie to react that there's not much she can do about her teeth (unless surgery is considered, but her teeth are fine the way they are, why ruin it?).

Now, I had no problem with J.D.'s comment that had some fellow Rockers resenting him, and turned off some viewers. What happened during song selection this week was what really made me label this guy as trouble. First, he convinces Jordis to let him have "We Are the Champions". Then he discovers he can't sing the song. He attempts to rearrange it to suit his range - but not only is his idea not working, the house band is pretty much averse to changing the way the song is originally sung. Knowing he's going to screw it, JD tries to exchange songs with Jordis again. Jordis may be the youngest rocker, but she's no pushover - so JD is stuck with the Queen song.

In my opinion, JD is acting like the playground bully who pushes people around to get a popular toy, only to realize he doesn't really like playing with it.

The icing on the cake of this "JD's got it coming" episode is the end where MiG sings "We Are the Champions" during rehearsal break and jokes that while others have to learn that song, he sings it because he loves it.

Harry Potter Series, Book 6
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Image hosted by Photobucket.comAuthor:J. K. Rowling
Genre:Children's Book
Fantasy, Magic
Publisher:Scholastic
Year Published:2005
I reserved the Half Blood Prince (HBP) at National Book Store months ago. It was available on the 16th but since I was lazy to go out this weekend, I only got my copy last Monday, 18th. I paid something below PHP800 and got a PHP100 certificate as well. Not sure if the book price went down or I got a discount for being a "Laking National" cardholder and paying PHP500 in advance to reserve the book. I wouldn't be reading it at once if my computer hadn't conked out. I'm thankful I had a book to read or else I'd be having SIMS2 withdrawal symptoms.

Last Monday, my friend texted to me that:
  • it was an easier read than Order of the Phoenix (OOP)
  • she wasn't too devastated by the love teams ... she's with the Harry/Hermione ship, so that's a clue
  • along with OOP, this isn't one of her favorites
OOP wasn't my favorite because Harry was an angry person for the most part of it, and it annoyed me that Goblet of Fire (GoF) didn't end with the kind of Harry I saw in the first chapter of OOP. There was no consistency. Now that I've finished HBP, I still think that emotion-wise, OOP's Harry is a bit out of place compared to the Harries in the other series.

My friend was right in saying that it is easier to read HBP compared to OOP. As I read the first chapter, I was delighted that the cadence in HBP is the same as in the first four books. When I got to the Spinner's End chapter though, I had to laugh. The theme was something out of fan fiction.

It's a fact that J.K. Rowling visits sites dedicated to Harry Potter. I am not sure though if she includes fan fiction in her prowling of the web. Either she has read too much fan fiction that it influenced her, or she hasn't read fan fiction and rather, it is I who has read too much of it that the real thing sounds familiar. Anyway, I'm guessing Draco fans will have a feast with this book. Who knows, the bits of fan-fiction moments in this book are intended and is Rowling's tribute to her fans.

Little bits:
  • I find it amusing that following the trend of no Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA) professor lasting for more than a year in Hogwarts, Snape, who finally gets the post, does something that will not make it possible for him to return to Hogwarts in the near future
  • Harry and Ginny do become a couple but break up in the end because it will be dangerous for Ginny to be linked with Harry ... I'm wondering how things will be in the last book. Ron and Hermione haven't become an item yet, but it's getting there. It's a strong ship. The book shoots down the Harry/Hermione ship, and if Harry hadn't broken up with Ginny, the Draco/Ginny ship would have sunk too.
  • I think Dumbledore dying is a must if Harry must learn to stand by himself in the final battle. Dumbledore's been his security blanket for so long.
  • Slughorn's taking over the helm of Slytherin has made it possible for Slytherins to look less notorious.

Another read and this book may actually become one of my favorites, along with Sorcerer's Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban.

Episode Six:July 21, 2005

Time Slot:Thursday 9:00 a.m.;

Reality Show extra - J.D.'s housemates did not like his comments about him knowing the INXS songs better than anybody and they confront him on it. He was unapologetic ... probably because he didn't think he did anything wrong.

J.D. does get commended (again) for "Hand in My Pocket", Suzie's version of "Roxanne" got special mention as well, and MiG is told he's now transformed to rocker (I wonder if theater folk like the idea that this is a compliment). No one gets an encore tonight.

Tara ends up in the bottom three for the second week, with Neal and Jessica joining her. By this time, I think Tara is confused. Last week she missed the mark by sounding too country, she gets edgier this week only to be told she's too hard rock. I frankly cannot remember Jessica's performance - so maybe her forgettable rendition was why she ended at the bottom. Neal being called out is no surprise for me, but apparently he was surprised he ended at the bottom. More amazing is that his fellow Rockers were dismayed he got the axe. Maybe they thought it would be Tara - after all, this is her second week at the bottom.

This guy reminds me so much of Mick Jagger - only with finer facial features. He's got stage presence, I'll give him that - he struts around like a cock, actually. I thought he had promise, until "Summer of 69" showed he's a bit tone deaf.

Week Two: Performance Night

Episode Five:July 20, 2005
Genre:Reality/Music Show
Time Slot:Wednesday 9:30 a.m.;

In the first episode, I thought Marty was one shy guy... but, based on what he did tonight - apparently not.

Suzie didn't look like a gypsy, thank Ellie Mae. Her version of Police's "Roxanne" is forgettable though.

MiG didn't wreck "Walk This Way", and I thought he did well - then again, I don't know all the lyrics to that song as well so I can't judge. He fell flat on his back in relief when the song was over and that probably earned him "cute" points among the ladies.

The train wreck happened when Neal stepped out to do Bryan Adams' "Summer of 69". He decided to use his guitar, but I don't think Gibson appreciates that because for most of the number, this Mick Jagger clone was off key. It was a pain watching him. Really.

I missed JD's encore-worthy "California Dreaming", but tonight's "Hand in My Pocket" was also great - he totally transformed the song. He could be asked to sing an encore of this too. He's definitely on top of the list of "most likely to win". He gets complimented ofcourse, but totally ruins the moment by saying that he's known and loved INXS songs growing up while the other hopefuls are still learning the songs.

As I expected, Deanna's "un-love" for "The One I Love" definitely showed in her performance and she just managed to get through it without murdering the song the way Neal murdered "Summer of 69".

Brandon sang Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama", another song I like. He just sang it the way it was supposed to be sung, and he put his guitar to good use. Only thing that bugged me was him going barefoot on stage. This guy's really coming across as country rock.

Gibson gives away guitars for each of the remaining rockers. Here's hoping they all know how to play the instrument.

Next perk would be the aid of a stylist. Dave greets the rockers wearing a ridiculous boa around his neck. He admits he looks funny, but points out that a famous rocker actually made wearing it a signature. It is therefore important to find a style that suits you - enter Ellie Mae who would be assisting the rockers from this point on. I'd like to add that it also means that if the rockers get on the stage looking silly - blame it on Ellie Mae.

In the room of fashion accessories, most of the rockers were eager to look at what is being made available for them to wear - including the men. Suzie and Brandon were the ones who seriously wanted tips regarding style - and I think they need it. Suzie thought she needed to look a bit sexy, and just about grabbed anything she thought might do the trick - I fear she'll look like a gypsy if no one restrains her. Brandon is looking so country rock, it's going to be tough working on him. Ty's proclamation about loving to dress up makes me wonder if he's gay. Neil would prance about like a rooster with an animal's tail dangling from his belt, I don't know what makes him think it's a good combination. In contrast to these fashion conscious guys, Jordis would say that she wasn't really into fashion and would prefer to stick to the clothes she brought for the competition - and most of them are black.

Later, MiG discovers that the next round of song selections are already posted and takes a peek before the others. Deanna got stuck with R.E.m.'s "The One I Love" and admits she doesn't feel the song. I think that's a bad sign already. MiG is having problem with the lyrics of "Walk this Way" by Aerosmith and I had to chuckle when he used the phrase "train wreck". J.D.'s reworking of the beat of Alanis Morisette's "Hand in My Pocket" sounds promising - mind you, I liked the original and would hate it if he ruins the song. At the end, I'm looking forward to how Deanna and JD will do in the performance show... Will Deanna spell her doom by making it plain that she doesn't like the song? Will J.D. succeed reworking "Hand in My Pocket"?

Movie: Fantastic Four

MPAA Rating:PG-13
for sequences of intense action, and some suggestive content

I'm tired of hearing which comic series is going to be a movie next. Yet, when they show it in theaters, I still go watch.

The fun in this movie stems from the dynamics of the group that finds itself an instant family after an accident in space has made it close to impossible for them to continue living a normal life. Johnny and Susan finding out they can't wear ordinary clothes (the clothes burn on Johnny, and Susan has to undress if she wants to be really invisible) is also worth a laugh.

The touching moment was when Ben Grimm's wife refuses to take him back after seeing he'd become what we call as The Thing.

For Grimm to choose to remain The Thing even if the technology to change him back exists sounds kind of stupid to me - but then, we won't have a fantastic four without him, would we?

I'd watch it again if they show it on cable, but I won't buy the DVD.

Week One: Elimination Night

Episode Three:July 14, 2005
Genre:Reality/Music Show
Time Slot:Thursday 9:00 a.m.;
Rerun at 9:00 p.m.

First up is an encore by J.D. Fortune for a good arrangement of California Dreaming. For INXS to be impressed enough to ask him to sing it again is saying something - J.D.'s one up on the other hopefuls.

I don't really watch American Idol, so I'm not familiar with how viewer participation works. For Rockstar:INXS, the viewers can vote via their cellphones or through the internet after the live show. The voting window is only open for a few hours. After that period, the votes are tallied, and the bottom three are singled out on Elimination night where each will sing a different INXS song. Based on previous performances and how well they sang the INXS song assigned to them, INXS will choose which of the bottom three is booted out of the mansion.

One "rocker", Dana, got sent home even before elimination night. For this week, the official first bottom three are Suzie, Tara and Wil. I'm betting the mansion incident with Marty ("Is that really your voice?") and forgetting the lyrics on her first song worked against Suzie because she didn't really suck on performance night. Frankly, I think the voters will most of the time be subjective - apart from talent, it's a combination of how the voters like your looks and attitude that will decide if you survive the competition. Therefore, it is a good thing that in the end, it is up to INXS to decide who really gets sent home.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comWil Seabrook
This guy looks nice, but I never really noticed him in the first episode - which meant he didn't have the rockstar presence then. Wil is not right for INXS because they think he tends to just focus on the girls in the front row instead of working on the whole audience. In other words, he's coming on like someone who's from a pop boy band.

Rockstar: INXS, Episode One
(Cable TV)

Image hosted by Photobucket.comNetwork:Star World (Asia)
This Episode:July 12, 2005
Genre:Reality/Music Show
Special Episode:Tuesday 9:00 a.m.;
Rerun at 9:00 p.m.

The first time I saw the TV ad promoting the show, I wasn't listening and thought it was about a contest in line with the release of a new album; the second time, I realized INXS is looking for a lead singer (what went through my head - "Did I hear that right?"). I didn't think it was a good idea. I'm not a fan of American idol ... maybe it's the combination of meanness and sometimes mediocre performances that turned me off, and if they're going to copy AI, I won't buy it. Little wonder I never really made a point to catch the first episode.

I've got to say I have to thank GMA's Encantadia for making me surf over to Star World during one of those looooong commercial breaks, just in time to catch the rerun of the first show that was aired this morning.

WOW!!! This, my friends, is an hour of listening to rock music! An episode is a concert by itself. The best part yet? Most of the hopefuls can really sing and rock the stage. I have only seen about 3 episodes of American Idol, and those are shows near the finals where my officemates had to switch the channel to see who'd be eliminated - and I must say the singers in Rockstar:INXS are a league above the American Idol finalists I saw.

Now, the show actually has a "reality TV part" which I didn't even know of beforehand. I'm not a fan of reality TV ... the only time I watched one was when MTV first aired it's version of Big Brother years ago. When they got to the second and other seasons, the novelty wore away for me. Anyway, I found the reality part of THIS show to be interesting. Maybe because all these people are talented and I'm interested to know more about them. Ofcourse, the fact that they focused on the guy called Marty getting insecure when another contestant, Suzie, asked him about his voice, shows that the producers are going to milk whatever drama they could get no matter how petty ... I hope that doesn't ruin the rest of the show - it would be tragic for INXS.

Two people stuck out because they performed well - Jordis who was the first to sing and stopped me from clicking the remote control; and Ty - he's got lots of energy and controlled the stage...don't like his spiky hair much, but it's easy to overlook given his performance. J.D. was also good but there were parts of his performance where his actions were uncomfortable for me to watch ... it doesn't help that his shaking his head and hands before the competition just weirded me out.

Because of the "reality show" part, I would remember Marty and Suzie. As fate would have it, Suzie would forget the lyrics and Marty would breeze through his song. If Marty was insecure when the show started, it's Suzie who's worrying about being kicked out when her number was over.

Two other people stuck out for the wrong reasons. Dana started "Knocking on Heaven's Door" well, then the long scream at the end just ruined it. MiG sang "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the song just sounded odd with him doing it ... his voice was too high.

Eventually, INXS called on three of the rockers: JD, Suzie, and Dana. They told JD he was overdoing it on the stage and they warned Suzie on forgetting the lyrics. That left Dana and we all get a surprise to find that she's been dropped off the list even before competition got heated up.

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDana Robbins
She got kicked out before the episode was over, and I agree that it really sucks to be the first to go. It was the screech that did it. I don't know if she has really unpacked yet before she has to pack up again.
More about Dana Robbins:
Career/Day Job:Bartender/Yoga Instructor/Dancer
Currently resides in:Studio City, California, USA

Musical Career:Was a showgirl by age 17 and founded the band Honey Pot while in Vegas. She eventually moved to Los Angeles and performed with the group Alien Show Girls, which is a sexy, campy, fun type of band. She has also appeared in a few films (Sinful Obsession, Stripper Wives and Intimate Nights), wherein she had brief nude scenes - this bit may get her labelled a porn actress by some people. Before joining Rockstar: INXS, she has formed her own band, called Aerial - which is a hard rock band. I expect she has returned to this band when she left the Rockstar mansion.

Movie: War of the Worlds

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDistributor:Paramount Pictures
Release:June 29th, 2005
Genre:Science Fiction/Fantasy
MPAA Rating:PG-13
for frightening sequences of sci-fi violence and disturbing images

There's something about Tom Cruise that makes me not like all his movies. Cruise has an overbearing personality that always finds its way into the character he portrays. This works in some movies, but not in all. That is the reason I was wary about watching this film. When I was about 10, I devoured science fiction, including H.G. Wells, and so War of the Worlds was familiar to me. I didn't know if Cruise would ruin the story for me or not.

Surprise, Cruise was able to act without overdoing it. This is one of those rare times I wished he had more to do. It's the script itself that failed to deliver. Most of the time, we see people running away from the tripods lest they get hit by the rays and turn to dust. The menace represented by the tripods is terrifying. The movie however, did not put enough time to explore the inner turmoil going through the characters. They just are, but I would have liked to see why they reacted differently to the situation. At the end of the movie, I felt I just got off a fun ride. The movie just did not evoke too much of an emotion in me. Special effects were great though.

Some people felt disappointed at the ending. A friend thought it was anticlimactic for the aliens to die of germs. This is one area you cannot blame the script writer - the book the movie was based on did have the Martians dying that way.

By the way, have you heard? Some real scientists are worried that all this space exploration by humans of Mars may introduce virus or bacteria that may be harmful to the planet. That's in addition to the junk we've been littering space with.

Movie: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDistributor:Touchstone Pictures
Release:April 29, 2005
Genre:Action/Adventure, Comedy, Science Fiction/Fantasy
MPAA Rating:PG
for thematic elements, action and mild language

There was a buzz in some sectors of the internet community about this movie even when it was still filming, that I was curious to see it just to figure out what they were talking about. The movie blew me away. The gags were just delightful. The script was good and the actors portrayed their roles well that you can't help falling in love with the characters.

Arthur Dent is the ordinary man forced to deal with extraordinary situations beginning with finding out that his good friend, Ford Perfect, is an alien - and on the day they first met, Ford was actually trying to befriend the car that nearly ran him over.

Ford on the other hand, is one guy you wouldn't mind getting stuck with if you found yourself homeless because the Vogons blew up your planet. After all, Ford's been roaming the galaxy and has 3 cool things with him - the informative traveler's guide, the ring to wear on your hitchhiker's thumb, and the towel you should't leave home without.

Ford's book is a fun read ... and gives practical advice when it comes to Vogons. They are, by the way, a race that happens to control much of the galaxy - they could even blow up a planet (like Earth) just because it was in the way of an intergalactic route. They're a narrow minded lot (oh yeah, just love the scene on the Vogons' planet where they get slapped on the head by something coming from the ground if anyone has original thoughts), can kill you with their terrible poetry, and it is surprising their government is even running despite having the worst bureaucratic red tape you'll ever find - it was hilarious when Arthur Dent said he's familiar with it because he's a Brit.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Ofcourse you can't get around the galaxy with no ship. After a brief, disastrous interlude in a Vogon space craft, our hitchhikers become guests on the spaceship called Heart of Gold - which looks like a teapot floating in space. That's where we meet Zaphod Beeblebrox, his companion Trillian, and the robot Marvin.

Zaphod is the egomaniac president of the galaxy who's wanted for stealing the Heart of Gold, while Trillian is this Earth chick who's with him because she finds living on Earth a bore. The character on this spaceship that I fell in love with, however, is a robot. Marvin, voiced by Alan Rickman, is just the most depressing robot I've ever seen - am I the only person thinking of Eeyore when thinking of Marvin? His dialogues are just so funny.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

This movie entertained me from start to finish, I would actually buy the DVD so I could watch it as often as I want. Moviegoers like me who are not familiar with the book but enjoyed the film will go buy the book just to find out how much of the story didn't make it to the movie. Considering that it's rare that 100% of a good book makes it to the movie version, and that the tale was long enough to be made into a TV series in the UK - imagine how much fun the moviegoer missed?

TV Series: Encantadia
Week Seven

Image hosted by Photobucket.comNetwork:GMA
First Run:May 2, 2005 to (present)
Genre:Adventure, Fantasy
Time Slot:Weekdays, 9:00 p.m.
Danaya has got to be one of the meatier roles in this series. I wonder if this was planned from the beginning or whether her role was improved because the character clicked with the audience. She is even more interesting than Milagros or Amihan. Alena's character is developing into an interesting character as well. I like it that the writers made Lira doubt her sanity and Anthony wonder if she's lunatic ... it's the expected reaction of sane people (he he he!). I do hate the development of the love triangles ... well, I can take it if the writers manage to prevent the story from becoming a continual love fest. Muyak finally gets some action... it must be hard to be a wall paper.

This week's story:

Mila is shocked at what she just did to Marge and runs out. Anthony runs after her. He would catch up to her but Mila would insist on walking home alone.

Meanwhile, the dogs that Danaya "freed" would meet Muyak and decide to go back to Danaya and tell her they found another one like her. They were about to lead her to the other fairy when police arrive and tell Danaya that they have to take her in for disturbing the peace. Danaya resists and runs away with her dog friends. The police shoot at her and hits one of the dogs.

In Lireo, Alena is slowly digesting the fact that her last memory occurred years ago and that Hitano lied to her in saying Ybarro is dead. Once it has sunk in that Ybarro is alive, Alena wishes to see him immediately. Amihan calls Muros and tells him to accompany Alena to Apitong's camp where she would find Ybarro.

Pirena arrives from Hathoria and calls Lira to her room. Pirena would interrogate Lira about Mila but the girl refuses to speak until Pirena is forced to hurt her. Terrified that her aunt would hurt her again, Lira admits that her friend has the mark of a sang'gre. Unable to contain her curiousity, Lira asks if the mark means Mila is a fairy, and if she is a fairy, how come she is living in the mortal world. Pirena tells Lira that at the moment, only she (Pirena) has the right to ask questions and not Lira.

At the Mandirigma camp, Ybrahim is in a foul mood. When asked by his foster father what's bothering him, he reveals feeling depressed that he had lost everything - his heritage, his love and finally, victory over Asval. Apitong gives him advice about having the will to survive.

Pirena would travel to Hathoria and tell Hagorn what Lira had just told her. Hagorn repeats his theory that Mila is the real Lira. Pirena resolves to cross the portal once more to get rid of Mila. As Pirena returns to Lireo, Alena travels towards Ybarro with two guards and comes across some Hathor terrorizing women from the Mandirigma camp. They take down the Hathors and are thanked by the women they saved. Alena asks the women a little favor regarding a disguise.

Back in Lireo, Pirena heads straight to Lira's quarters to ask how the girl is able to pass through Asnamon when Amihan had sealed it years ago. Lira retorts by telling Pirena to ask Amihan herself. Pirena loses her cool and once more hurts Lira until the girl tells her about the medallion. Pirena takes the key to the portal and leaves for the forest.

Near the Mandirigma camp, Ybrahim is alone and resting on a log. A Mandirigma woman with a covered face approaches and asks why he is not taking part in the festivities. He tells her he wants to be alone and think about his Alena. The woman hums a tune that reminds Ybrahim of Alena. He turns around to find Alena taking off the veil. Needless to say, the two are overjoyed to be back in each other's arms. Nearby, Amihan, who had been watching them secretly, decides to fade out and return to Lireo.

In Hathoria, Hagorn is telling Agane that the former queen of Lireo, Mine-a, had predicted that Amihan's daughter will be the one to save Encantadia from its enemies. Meanwhile, Lira is secretly following Pirena towards Asnamon and watches as Pirena commands the portal to take her to Mila. Lira would wonder at Pirena's heightened interest in her friend.

In the other world, Marge has left the hospital after doctors found nothing wrong with her. Considering that this was the second time she's had a freak accident while confronting Mila, she postulates to her friends that Anthony's maid must be a witch. Mila on the other hand, has gone to the church to pray and mull about her inexplicable powers. Anthony returns home and finds out Mila hasn't arrived. He goes out again to look for her.

Danaya would be mourning the death of the dog that got hit by a bullet; and Muyak is asking Bathala's help in locating Danaya. As Danaya watches over the funeral pyre for her dog friend, the other dog returns and Danaya apologizes for being unable to save its companion. The dog reminds her of seeing another fairy in the city and Danaya willingly follows the creature.

Another dog is with Muyak, and although the overgrown pixie cannot understand the language of animals, the dog's persistence made her realize it wanted her to follow it somewhere. Eventually, Muyak sees Danaya and greets her ecstatically. Considering that she has grown a few feet, lost her wings, and is now intangible, Danaya does not recognize her at once.

Meantime, Mila is walking home when another strangely garbed woman appears in her path. The woman asks if her name is Mila. Mila answers in the affirmative and walks away. The woman blocks her path and Mila found herself being attacked by fireballs. She had to use her own powers to deflect them.Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In Lireo, Amihan senses that her daughter is in danger. She orders Aquil to find Lira and see that she is safe.

Her real daughter however, has managed to deflect all of Pirena's attacks and has now switched to offense. Mila summoned her strength and blasted wind and lightning to bring down Pirena. Before Pirena could fully recover, Mila sends another strong wind to blow her away.

As this was going on, Muyak is convincing Danaya that she is who she says she is. She explains that since she is an ordinary fairy and not a sang'gre like Danaya, she does not have enough substance to retain her form in this world. She has become intangible that she cannot even be seen by mortals. Danaya informs her that everyone thought she had been killed by Hathors and asks what she had been doing in the world of mortals.

Muyak replies that she has been watching over Lira. Danaya tells her that Lira is back in Encantadia. Muyak is adamant she has been watching over the real Lira and recounts how she witnessed Pirena try killing Amihan's baby but failed to do so because of the protection given the child by Danaya herself. She followed Pirena who took Lira and brought her through Asnamon to leave her to die in the world of mortals.

The mention of Pirena was probably enough to make Danaya believe Muyak. As Muyak goes on about the hard life of her charge, Danaya was thinking how this story is confirming her doubts and suspicions. She now knows why Pirena came back to make peace with Amihan, why the Lira she knew in Lireo has the gift of fire when Amihan's power is controlling the wind, why Pirena dotes so much on Lira, and why Amihan would sometimes feel her daughter is in danger when Lira is actually safe and sound. Danaya asks Muyak to show her the REAL Lira.

While Danaya is following Muyak, she does not know that she is being hunted down by the police who are advising people to stay in their houses as much as possible while the hunt is ongoing. Carmen would be worried sick that her son Anthony is still out of the house. Anthony is ofcourse driving around looking for Mila. He would find her sitting in the park and distressed. Anthony starts asking if the incident with Marge is still disturbing her, but Mila changes the topic and asks him what he thinks about her having superpowers. Anthony thought she was joking and told her it was time to go home.

A frustrated Pirena steps back into Encantadia to find Lira waiting for her near the portal. Lira asks what Pirena wanted with Mila and is told off. Lira then demands that Pirena return the medallion. Pirena refuses to give it back and threatens to tell Amihan what Lira has been doing if Lira does not back off.

As a worried Lira watches Pirena stomp off, Alena and Ybarro are still catching up on each other. Finally, Alena asks the question Ybarro dreads to answer - was there another woman in his life when she was gone? Instead of answering, Ybarro takes notice that it is getting late and tells Alena it's time for her to return to Lireo. Ybarro volunteers to accompany her but Alena shows him that she had brought guards with her. Alena gives Ybarro a cloak before they part.

On the other side of the portal, Danaya and Muyak would get to the mansion before Mila and Anthony. Thinking she heard her son come in, Carmen rushes out of the house only to find the crazy woman the police had been looking for standing outside her gate.

Danaya asks Carmen where Lira is, but Carmen does not recognize the name. Muyak, who only Danaya could see, whispers that Lira's name amongst mortals is Mila. Danaya addresses Carmen once more and asks where Mila is. Carmen tells Danaya to go away. Muyak whispers to Danaya that Carmen and the maid who stands beside her often mistreat Lira. This bit of information angers Danaya and she grabs both mortals by the neck and slams them against the gate.

While Danaya is lecturing the mortals about how they should not raise a hand against a sang'gre, police arrive and tell her to release the two women. Danaya lets go and bends to pick up her arnis. The police take this as a sign of aggression and fire at her. Danaya is hit and goes down. The cops approach and find that she is still alive. They take her to the hospital. A worried Muyak rides along.

The police had gone by the time Mila and Anthony return. One of the maids tell Mila the scene she just missed. Anthony is greeted by his worried mother who tells him what had happened while he is out looking for Mila. She then asks suspiciously if he is falling in love with the maid. The question makes him uncomfortable for he does not know the answer himself.

In Lireo, another feather appears out of thin air and is brought by the wind to Amihan. Amihan becomes worried at seeing this, and Aquil asks her what it means. Amihan tells him that the feather is a sign that Danaya is in trouble.

In Hathoria, Pirena is telling Hagorn that her failure to even hurt Mila confirms that the girl is Amihan's daughter. This is because Mila seems to have the natural defense against Pirena's powers that Danaya had blessed Amihan's child with when she was a baby. Hagorn tells Pirena that he would attempt to kill the girl. Pirena gives him the key to the portal.

Alena returns to Lireo to find Amihan at the grounds dressed in armor and sending a ball of air to the skies. When asked what she is doing, Amihan replies that she has told the wind to bring Danaya back home. The three would be surprised when Hathors appear and attack them. When they had finished cutting the enemy down, Aquil voices his alarm that the Hathors were bold enough to enter the area and attack them. Amihan and Alena agree that the place is not safe, and takes Aquil with them as they dematerialize from the grounds to materialize within the palace.

Realizing that Pirena is out of the palace, Lira, who wants to visit her crush, starts hunting for the medallion in her aunt's room. Pirena catches her and tells her she won't find what she's looking for in that room.

Lira soon finds out that Agane has the medallion and she follows Agane and the Hathors through the portal in order to retrieve the medallion.

Amihan would sense that her daughter is in danger the moment the Hathors crossed the gate between two worlds.

In the world of mortals, an unconscious Danaya is handcuffed to a hospital bed. She wakes up briefly when Amihan's ball of air hovers above her. Later, Danaya felt well enough to leave and she takes on the form of a dog in order to escape.

Agane and her men would appear in Anthony's house and when they see Mila they attack. Mila escapes them by "orbing" out. Lira would appear and fight Agane to get back the medallion. Lira succeeds and the Hathors go back to Encantadia with Lira at their heels.

Meanwhile, Mila would materialize just outside the kitchen. She sees Anthony inside and tells him what just happened. Anthony thinks she is on drugs. Anthony relates to his mother Mila's story and Carmen opines that the girl is a lunatic and should be fired.

Mila starts thinking that she's going crazy for seeing all those weird looking people. Anthony is also worrying about her and admits to himself that he loves her.

In Encantadia, Agane reports to Hagorn that they failed because Lira interfered. Pirena would know of this and when Lira returns to the castle, Pirena speaks to her about meddling with her plans. Lira asks if Pirena was the one who gave the medallion to the Hathors, as asks why she wants Mila dead. Pirena tells Lira that Mila is the enemy and will hinder her succession to the throne. Pirena would reason out that although Mila is a mortal, she comes from another world and could pose a danger they are not aware of. Lira does not believe Pirena and stands by her friend .

Amihan would consult with Ybrahim on how they will break to Alena the fact that her Ybarro is the Ybrahim that fathered Amihan's daughter. When Alena joins them, Ybarro asks if she wants to meet Ybrahim. Alena says she is not interested in meeting that person. When she starts administering her affections on Ybarro, he and Amihan can't bring themselves to tell her what they planned to reveal. When a happy Ybrahim leaves Lireo, Asval would appear in his path and burst his bubble by telling him that lying to Alena will cause their break-up.

At another outpost of Lireo, Hitano had joined the Hathors in another foray and does not think twice about killing his former comrades. Agane compliments him and notes that anger seems to work for him. Hitano tells her that rather, it is his desire to have Alena that drives him.
When Hitano gets to speak with Gurna later, she updates him that Alena and Ybarro have hooked up again. This only stokes his anger.

In the forest, Lira makes another visit to Cassiopeia to ask who Mila truly is. Cassiopeia reveals that Mila will be the next queen of Lireo. This bit of information takes Lira by surprise. She does not believe Cassiopeia and goes home.

In the other world, Anthony would get to talk with Mila's friend Gigi and ask her if Mila has some kind of brain sickness. Gigi tells him that Mila is harmless although she's always seen strange things and had an imaginary fairy friend called Muyak. Anthony decides to visit a doctor to consult about Mila. Based on Anthony's description, the doctor agrees that she is loony and tells him that she needs the support of her loved ones, who must show that she is loved despite her condition. Anthony would start showing his love by bringing home a white rose for Mila.
While Anthony is telling Mila why he's giving her the rose, Danaya is outside the house and is discussing with Muyak how she could talk with her niece. Muyak asks Danaya to stay outside and not cause another disturbance. Muyak goes in and reveals herself to Mila once she is alone.

Now, the last time Mila saw Muyak was when she was a child. Since then, she had dismissed Muyak as an imaginary friend. So, the appearance of Muyak now makes her think she must have gone insane. She refuses to acknowledge the presence of Muyak and tells herself she's hallucinating. Muyak tells Mila that someone has come to visit, and if she goes outside, she'll find out if Muyak is real and telling the truth, or not.

Mila follows Muyak to the garden where Danaya is waiting. She remembers their odd first meeting and asks if Danaya is a fairy like Muyak. Danaya answers that she, Muyak, and Mila herself, are all fairies. Mila rejects the idea that she is a fairy and insists she is normal like everybody else. Danaya tells Mila that the power she has shown on certain occassions (as seen by Muyak who related it to Danaya) is proof that she is a fairy. Fearing she has just crossed the line to insanity, Mila gets away from them. Muyak tells Danaya to give Mila time to process the information.

In Lireo, Amihan finds Lira distraught and learns Cassiopeia had told her that Mila will be queen. Amihan affirms that Lira is the rightful heir to the throne and asks who Mila is. Pirena interrupts before Lira could answer. She asks to speak to Lira and brings the girl someplace where no one could hear them.

Once out of everybody's earshot, Pirena asks why Lira is telling her mother about Mila. Lira responds that she might as well ask her mother if Pirena can't tell her anything. Pirena gives in and tells Lira that Mila is indeed a fairy and not a mortal. Pirena proceeds to tell a yarn about how long ago a wicked group of fairies started war in Encantadia, and that most of the renegades were killed, but Mila survived and hid in the world of mortals. To cap off, Pirena tells Lira that Mila has been cursed and will always pose a danger to Lira. Pirena tells Lira that Amihan does not know this story to ensure the girl will not approach her mother to confirm the tale.

Amihan, on the other hand, would start thinking about what Lira told her that the name Mila gets stuck in her head. Imaw would even hear her murmur the name in her sleep. Her real worry though, is Danaya, who has not come back and could not be found (I assume the air bubble is not strong enough to bring Danaya across the portal, so it came back empty to Amihan). Alena sees her pacing outside the palace, thinking about Danaya, and suggests she calls back the Mulawin spirit, Avilan, who's watching over Danaya. Amihan reveals that she cannot command Avilan because he has chosen to serve Danaya.

In the forest, Lira goes back to Cassiopeia to confirm what Pirena had told her. Cassiopeia corroborates Pirena's story and Lira leaves. When she meets Hagorn, she would spill to him what has been troubling her. Hagorn would take the opportunity to add that it is the renegade fairy Mila who is the real enemy of Lireo, and not Hathoria. Back in Cassiopeia's lair, Pirena shows up with Hathors carrying a chest gold as payment for lying to Lira.

In the world of mortals, AVilan is in the form of a bird and watching over Danaya, who has already decided to come back to Lireo to tell the queen what she had uncovered. The problem is, the portal did not open when she called on Asnamon. Muyak breaks to her the bad news that the portal may have been sealed again, and that they are stuck in the world of mortals.

At the mansion, Anthony learns that Mila has run off again and he takes off to find her. He would find her in the church and persuades her to come home. When they enter the house, Carmen scolds her son for spending time with the crazy maid. Anthony tells Mila to rest then dealt with his mother. When Carmen suggests Mila should be fired, Anthony warns her she will have to dear with his ire if she does that. He leaves his mother to visit Mila in her room.

Mila tells Anthony that maybe she is crazy as his mother says, and perhaps she should leave. Anthony tells her she is not leaving and reminds her that when they were kids and roaming the park homeless (both had run away from home), he had promised to look after her. He tells Mila that he still is looking after her as he had promised.

In Lireo, Hitano had silently followed Ybarro to the palace gates and watches from his hiding place as Alena greets her lover. Inside the palace, Pirena demands where Lira has snuck off to. Lira confesses that she had visited Cassiopeia who confirmed Pirena's story. When Pirena tells Lira that the medallion would be needed if they are to send someone to kill Mila, Lira declares that she would kill Mila herself.

When Lira had gone, Pirena tells Gurna how amusing it is that the acknowledged daughter of Amihan will kill the queen's real daughter.

Outside the palace, Hitano aims a spear at Ybarro and misses. The guards immediately surround Alena and Ybarro. Ybarro sees Hitano running away and pursues him. Alena would follow and run into some Mandirigmas. Ybarro catches up to Hitano and challenges him to a fight. When Hathors show up, Ybarro realizes he walked into an ambush and has no choice but take on all of them. To his relief, Alena arrives bringing Apitong, Wantuk and Apek, and together they bring down the Hathors.

Hitano realizes defeat and runs home to Hathoria. Alena rushes after him before Ybarro and the others could stop her. As the Asnamon is near the path Hitano took, Alena takes a pause and hides near the great tree when she sees someone near the portal. Alena watches as the young fairy used a medallion to open the portal and walk through.

Hitano reaches Hathoria alone and Agane asks where his companions are. Hitano reports to Hagorn and Agane that the ambush was thwarted by the Mandirigmas. This prompts Hagorn to order the extinction of Apitong and his people.

In the world of mortals, Danaya is still outside figuring out how to return to Encantadia, and Muyak is with her thinking how she could convince Lira/Mila that she is really a fairy and not a mortal. Anthony visits Mila's room to check on her and thinking she is asleep, whispers sweet nothings. Mila was actually awake and heard him, and immediately fell asleep with a smile on her face right after Anthony left. So it is that when the portal deposits Lira in Mila's room, she would find Mila really sleeping.

Lira whispers her apologies to the sleeping Mila and raises her blade for the kill. She hesitates, remembering how Mila had been kind to her. She hesitates too long, for someone could be heard running towards the room before Lira could make up her mind. She orbs out just as Anthony opens the door. It seems that the moment Lira raised the blade, the sleeping Anthony woke up thinking he heard Mila scream for help. Appearing outside the door, Lira peeks in to see her crush telling the sleeping Mila that he loves her. Lira orbs back beside the bed the moment the person is gone, and Mila wakes up, surprised to see her standing there.

On the other side of the portal, Alena turns back after having lost sight of her quarry. Apitong returns to his camp, Alena returns to Lireo, and Ybarro and his two friends tarry in the forest. Asval appears to taunt him once more about lying to Alena. Ybarro tells him to mind his own business, but his two friends provoke the strangers to a fight.

At the palace, Alena is greeted by Pirena who asks if she stepped out for a walk. Alena tells Pirena about Hitano then adds that she saw someone opening the portal to the other world. Pirena says that Alena could be mistaken in what she saw. Alena answers that she is positive that someone used the portal but she wasn't able to see her face. When she began asking where Amihan is so that she could report the opening of the Asnamon, Pirena says they should verify this before disturbing the queen.

In the other world, Lira ignores Mila's question on what she is doing in her room, and instead asks who was the man who visited. Taking a guess at who it was she saw, Mila tells Lira it's time she met Anthony. They go out and find Anthony taking a nap in the living room. Lira asks who Anthony is to Mila. Mila tells her he is the one she loves. Lira is devastated to learn that her friend is the person her crush is in love with.

Lira goes back to Encantadia in tears and meets Pirena who asks if Mila is dead. Lira answers that she was not able to kill Mila. Pirena demands to know if someone saw her use the portal. Mila says no one saw her; Pirena tells her that Alena saw her open the portal and leave Encantadia.

While Pirena is interrogating Lira, Alena is telling Amihan what she saw at the Asnamon. The queen, who had been missing her medallion, orders Aquil to guard the portal for whoever is using it is the thief they'd been looking for.

Dismissed by Pirena, Lira would sulk by the fountain at the palace grounds where Alena would see her. Pirena catches Alena watching Lira from afar and asks what she finds interesting. Alena says the girl looks familiar. Pirena tells her that the girl is Amihan's daughter and before Alena got her memory back they spent a lot of time together. Alena contradicts Pirena by saying the girl is familiar because she is the one she saw walking through the portal.

Back in the forest, Ybrahim managed to stop the scuffle and told Asval to leave him alone. The two exchanged words about fate before Asval and his companions decided to leave. By the time Ybrahim and his pals neared camp, it was already dark. They realize something is wrong because there are no lights. When they did reach camp, they find people dead on the ground. Ybrahim searches for his foster father and find Apitong struck with arrows but still alive. Apitong regains consciousness long enough to tell Ybrahim that it was the Hathors who attacked and he faced Agane herself. Before dying, Apitong tells Ybrahim that he is proud of him and regrets having to depart now.

After surveying the scene, Apek runs to Lireo and tells Aquil he needs an audience with the queen. Aquil escorts Apek to the main hall where Apek reports that Hathors had attacked the Mandirigma camp and killed everyone, including Apitong. Amihan orders Aquil to bring the news to Alena and rushes off with the other guards to the Mandirigma camp.

In the world of mortals, Danaya and Muyak decide to go back to Mila. They arrive at the house to see her taking out the trash. They greet Mila but are ignored. Mila walks back to the house. She sits by the pool where Anthony finds her looking troubled. To distract her from her thoughts, Anthony asks Mila to sing the way she used to when they were kids. Mila obliges and sings. Banjo, who had come to visit Mila and present her with flowers, see the two together and leaves.

At the grounds of Lireo, Alena is taking a walk and hears someone singing. Thinking it is Lira whom Alena had given the gift of voice when she was a baby, Alena calls out to her niece. She walks around to find where the voice is coming from and finds nobody else in the area. Aquil would find her looking for Lira when he delivers the news about the massacre at the Mandirigma camp.

By that time, Amihan and her guards had reached the camp to see Ybrahim mourning Apitong's death. Amihan approaches Ybrahim to condole his loss. Ybrahim hugs her and expresses his grief. Alena would arrive to find Ybarro hugging Amihan.

Movie: Batman Begins

Image hosted by Photobucket.comDistributor:Warner Bros.
Release:June 15, 2005
Genre:Crime/Gangster
MPAA Rating:PG-13
for intense action violence, disturbing images and some thematic elements

Some people I've talked to didn't like this as much as the first one, which was made by Tim Burton, although they would agree it is much better than the batman movie previous to this.

I, on the other hand, loved this movie and thinks it is cooler than the first one. Maybe because Christian Bale is closer to my age than Michael Keaton is. It's funny how my mind links his name to Empire of the Sun (which by the way, is one of my favorites), associates his face with Reign of Fire, and not make the connection. I have also seen his adult face in other movies, but it never registered to me that he was the same kid whose touching portrayal made me cry in the Spielberg movie. In this movie, it is not his portrayal of Batman that stood out - what stood out was his portrayal of Bruce Wayne. If previous Batman movies cloaked Wayne in mystery, this movie tried to get into his psyche. To paraphrase a line uttered by Alfred: Why isn't Wayne in a straightjacket?

Which brings me to the butler. I must say that this is the first Batman movie where I remember scenes with Alfred in them. I can't remember what the Alfred of the other movies were like. By asking Michael Caine to portray the character, Batman Begins is therefore emphasizing the important role of the only person who saw, and perhaps aided, the transformation of Bruce Wayne to Batman. Caine has made Alfred an endearing person - loyal to his master, believing in, and never giving up on the only son of the man he idolized. If Alfred did not remember so much of Wayne Sr., he would not have been able to impart the departed man's values to his son.

It's also a joy to see Gary Oldman portray future the commissioner, Gordon, as your everyday man struggling to maintain his morals in a job exposed to corruption. It's one of those movies where Oldman is not playing a person on the brink of insanity (Sirius Black included), or a villain.

Morgan Freeman was superb as Lucius Fox ... definitely aware of what Wayne's up to, but able to pretend he knows nothing if Wayne does not wish to divulge anything. But then, Freeman's always been a cool guy, even from the first time I saw him in the kids' show Electric Company (which to my surprise, only a few my age remember - maybe they just watched Sesame Street and not flipped to other channels).

Liam Neeson is getting the mentor role in a lot of movies lately. Maybe because his persona exudes it. In this movie, he is the gentleman with the cool action moves. I do know he can be wacky as I've seen him in Saturday Night Live (although I only recall "You Call This a House, Do Ya?").

Katie Holmes wasn't much of a stand out. Frankly, the girls who get into Batman films as simply Wayne's love interest never did stand out (I remember Kim Basinger because she was Kim Basinger). You have to be a villain to get good screen time (Michelle Pfeiffer had a good role wherein she was both love interest and villain).

This is one movie I wouldn't mind watching again.
